A Journey of Learning and Leadership
Gail Pope's extraordinary journey began in Harrow, England, and led her to Southern California, where she co-founded BrightHaven Center for Animal Rescue, Hospice, and Holistic Education with her husband, Richard.
What started as "Cats Are People Too" in the late 1980s evolved into BrightHaven in 1993, a sanctuary dedicated to senior and special needs animals. This transition reflects Gail's growing understanding of the circle of life and death, and her commitment to enhancing the lives of vulnerable animals.
Embracing Holistic Animal Care
Following a holistic path, Gail has developed a comprehensive approach to animal care that considers the physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being of animals. Her philosophy emphasizes the integration of holistic methods with conventional care, often leading to improved health and longevity for the animals in her care. Gail primarily employs classical veterinary homeopathy and is a certified animal Reiki Level 3 Practitioner, showcasing her commitment to diverse healing modalities.
Pioneering Animal Hospice Care
With over three decades of experience in animal healthcare, hospice, and natural dying, Gail has been a comforting presence at over 600 animal passings. Her work in this field is widely acclaimed, making BrightHaven a pioneer and leader in the ever-expanding field of animal hospice and palliative care. Gail's unique experience with hospice-supported natural dying has set new standards in animal end-of-life care.
Education and Outreach
Passionate about sharing her knowledge, Gail has authored seven books addressing various aspects of animal hospice and holistic care for older animals. Her comprehensive education program includes online self-paced courses about animal hospice, reflecting her commitment to "Helping People to Help Animals." Gail's international consultation practice reaches countless veterinarians and animal caregivers, sharing BrightHaven's natural methods and protocols.
Leadership and Influence
Gail's expertise extends beyond direct animal care. She has been deeply involved with the International Association of Animal Hospice and Palliative Care (IAAHPC) for many years, serving on their early Board of Directors and later as an Advisory Board Member. Her module, "Understanding the Animal Dying Experience," is part of the IAAHPC certification program for Veterinarians, and her book "Soar My Butterfly: The Animal Dying Experience" is required reading for this program.
Gail currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Shelter Animal Reiki Association (SARA) and is a faculty member of Holistic Actions! for Companion Animals. She is also one of the founding partners of the Animal Hospice Group (AHG), further demonstrating her commitment to advancing the field of animal hospice care.
Recognition and Impact
In July 2013, Gail and Richard Pope received the prestigious Jefferson Award for Public Service, acknowledging their devoted service to vulnerable animals. This recognition underscores the significant impact of their work in animal rescue, hospice, and holistic education.
Today, Gail continues her mission of enhancing the lives of senior and special needs animals through BrightHaven Caregiver Academy. Her vision extends beyond individual animal care to reshaping how we approach end-of-life care for animals on a broader scale. Through her ongoing work, writing, and teaching, Gail strives to create a world where senior and special needs beings are given the respect and dignity they deserve, making the world a better place for all.
