Saving Senior & Special-Needs Cats When They Need It Most

BrightHaven Rescue is a small, volunteer-led, felines-only rescue program based in Northern California. We focus on helping senior cats and cats with medical or special needs who are most at risk in crowded shelters—often the very animals overlooked when time and resources run short.

These are cats whose lives still hold comfort, companionship, and meaning. With the right care and a safe place to land, many go on to enjoy months—or years—of quality life in loving homes.

Who We Help

The cats we rescue are most often:

  • Senior cats, whose age alone puts them at risk
  • Cats with medical conditions that are treatable or manageable
  • Cats needing time, patience, and rehabilitation before placement

Shelters do incredible work, but when capacity is reached, animals with age-related or medical needs are often the first to face euthanasia. BrightHaven Rescue exists to step in at that critical moment.

What Makes BrightHaven Rescue Different

Medical Rehabilitation as a Core Focus

BrightHaven Rescue specializes in medical rehabilitation, which sets us apart from many traditional rescue programs. We work to stabilize health conditions, coordinate appropriate care, and support foster homes through the process.

Many of the medical concerns we see—arthritis, dental disease, kidney issues, mobility challenges—are not a sentence, but a call for thoughtful, supported care.

Foster-Based Placement

We place cats directly into foster homes from shelters. This allows each cat to decompress, receive individualized care, and be truly seen for who they are—not just their age or diagnosis.

Older cats, in particular, often make wonderful companions. They have already loved deeply. Now they simply need a soft place to land.

Foster or Adopt

You can make a life-changing difference by:

  • Becoming a foster home, offering temporary care and love
  • Adopting a cat, and welcoming a senior or special-needs companion into your life

Fostering saves lives—often more than one at a time—by creating space for the next cat in need.

Your donation helps us continue—and strengthen—our work with senior, disabled, and chronically ill cats, one of the most vulnerable populations in animal welfare.

Your support helps provide:

  • Veterinary and rehabilitation care
  • Foster supplies and medical support
  • A second chance for cats who would otherwise have none

Ways to Give

  • One-Time Donation
  • Monthly Giving (provides predictable, life-saving support)
  • Online Tribute Gifts (honor a loved person or animal)

Every gift matters. Together, we help people help animals—and ensure that no life is dismissed simply because it is older or requires care.
