Karen Wylie's remarkable career spans from corporate consulting to animal hospice advocacy. With a Master's in Life Stage Developmental Counseling and a Doctorate in Organizational Learning from Vanderbilt University, Karen's journey reflects a commitment to lifelong learning and helping others navigate life's transitions.
This unique educational background, combined with her extensive practical experience, allows Karen to bring a holistic, compassionate approach to pet caregiver education. Her expertise in understanding life stages and learning provides a strong foundation for her work in empowering pet parents and caregivers.
From Corporate Change to Compassionate Care
Karen's early career focused on guiding corporations through complex changes, from mergers and acquisitions to ethical challenges. Her work spanned diverse industries, including healthcare, manufacturing, and even the US Military. However, a move to the artisan-rich Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina sparked a shift towards supporting families and solo entrepreneurs in creating unique, value-driven businesses.
Embracing Life's
Full Circle
As her clients aged, Karen's focus naturally evolved to midlife and elder business consulting. This progression, coupled with a desire to support those facing terminal illnesses, led her to become a Hospice Volunteer and Certified Death Doula. Her expertise in grief, loss, and bereavement now extends to both humans and animals.
A Lifelong Commitment to Animal Care and Education 🐾
Karen's deep and spiritual connection with animals, combined with her background as an educator, forms the foundation of her unique approach to pet caregiving. Her extensive experience in managing her own multi-pet family has provided her with invaluable insights into animal care at all life stages.
Karen's methodology seamlessly blends the meticulous attention required for newborn animal care with the deep compassion needed for aging pets. This holistic perspective ensures that every stage of an animal's life is treated with dignity and love, allowing her to support pet parents through all phases of their caregiving journey.
Her approach recognizes that caregiving skills are not innate but can be learned and improved upon. When faced with a pet's illness or aging, Karen equips pet parents with the tools and understanding to extend both the quality and length of their pets' lives through enhanced at-home care.
Revolutionizing Pet Hospice Education
Drawing from her personal experiences with aging and terminally ill pets, Karen became an advocate for improved end-of-life care for animals, with a particular focus on empowering pet parents. As the Executive Director of Animal Hospice Group, she leads innovative efforts to educate not only veterinary professionals but also—crucially—allied pet care practitioners in providing compassionate hospice care.
Recognizing the growing need for skilled at-home caregivers, especially in light of projected veterinary shortages, Karen's approach is transforming the landscape of pet hospice care education. Through her work with BrightHaven Caregiver Academy, she identifies and teaches the essential skills pet owners need to provide care after a life-changing or terminal diagnosis. By framing caregiving as a learnable skill, she helps pet parents feel more empowered and capable of providing the best possible care for their animal companions, preparing them to take on a new, vital role in their pets' journey.
Today, Karen continues to blend her diverse expertise in organizational learning, life stage transitions, and animal care through her role at BrightHaven Caregiver Academy. She is dedicated to bridging the gap between veterinary expertise and home care, enabling pet parents to become confident, compassionate caregivers throughout their animals' lifespans.
